The Power List 2021 – Power List

Adjunct Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Tulane University School of Medicine, and Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at New York University, New York, USA

What is your proudest professional achievement?

There are two. After years of research, I performed the world’s first laser vision correction procedure on a sighted eye. Also, as a medical student, I developed a simple test to distinguish retinoblastoma from Coats disease, saving many babies from unnecessary enucleation.

Outside of ophthalmology, what makes you happy?

Spending time with my husband.

What can be done to make the field more diverse?

Keeping diversity top of mind on admission committees (medical school, residency programs, and fellowship programs) and when planning symposia (speakers, moderators, and program committee members).

Why is it important to celebrate women in the field this way?

It is important to celebrate anyone who improves the way that medicine is practiced; historically, women have sometimes received less recognition than they deserve.
